Position Objective: Provide services as a Scientist (NHPs) in support of the overall functions of the Vaccine Research Center (VRC), Therapeutics Research Program (TRP) within the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID).
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Perform various Non-Human Primate (NHP) Immunizations with (DNA/rAd) vaccines such as AAV, V1V2, hPIV, CD4bs, and HIV Trimer via IM / IV / SQ or ID injections.
- Perform NHP Challenges with SIV/ SHIV via IV/IR.
- Perform NHP EP (Electroporation) procedures with VRC investigators.
- Perform NHP BAL (Bronchoalveolar lavage) procedures.
- Assist in NHP necropsies and tissue collection / preparation.
- Prepare / Update and disseminate MSS (Master Sampling Schedule) for NHP studies.
- Prepare and update SOPs for NHP procedures.
- Keep track of NHP clinical cases and Communicate effectively with VRC- APD on treatment plans.
- Maintain NHP CBC/Chemistry data base.
- Maintain NHP Necropsy / Histopath reports database.
- Maintain NHP WTs and Temperatures Spread Sheets for various PIs and APD
- Travel to VRC contract facilities for QA/QC of all NHP procedures (Immunizations, Challenges), and report any issue to APD.
- Help VRC rodent techs with rodent treatment, blood, and serum collection on as needed base.
- Transport biological samples (blood/tissues/saliva/stool) from contract facilities to VRC.
- Transport therapeutic drugs (ART) / media (R10, RPMI) / sponges and other materials from VRC to contract facilities.
- Communicate effectively with Idexx and Clinical Center regarding cbc/chemistry reports
- Triage NHP cbc/chemistry results, and report abnormal finding to APD for effective remedies.
- Maintain NHP procedure Calendar, and update as needed.
Basic Qualifications:
- Bachelors in Biology or a related field.
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in a related field is required.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Ability to drive a government owed vehicle is required.
- Ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing, with non-technical and technical staff.
- Detail-oriented and possess strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize multiple tasks and projects
